In a desire to help all students achieve their maximum God-given potential, Christian Community Schools offers intervention programs for students who have experienced frustration and/or failure in school and also for 5 and 6 year olds who may be at risk for reading failure.
The Discovery Program
Educational therapy, established by the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD), uses intervention techniques in one-on-one educational sessions for approximately three hours per week. The focus of the intense individual session is on continual stimulation and development of deficit areas of perception, basic skills, and problem solving where the results can be restoration to normal or near normal functioning. This “stimulation” is accomplished through an interactive questioning and answering process which rather than teach compensatory techniques for weak areas, provides the needed stimulation of deficit areas and an emphasis on developing learning strategies that will help the student achieve his/her God-given potential.
Educational therapy is effective for students ages 5-Adult. Typically, students in the program improve 1-1.5 years academically each year. There are often positive changes (on the retesting) on intelligence testing after intervention. Parents and teachers also report significant changes in social maturity, in ease of managing class work, grades and self-concept. Progress is generally steady, but this is not a “quick fix” program. Most students will require a minimum of 3-4 years in the program to reach the independent learning status seen as the goal for dismissal.
The Search & Teach Program
This program is designed to search out 5 and 6 year old children who may be at risk for reading failure by screening those perceptual areas that are foundational to reading success. Upon completion of the screening, an individually prescribed program is established to stimultate those deficit areas of perception. The Search and Teach program is an individual and one-on-one approach. Students are seen for approximately 30 minutes a day, four days per week.
The NILD Transition Program
This program is designed for students transitioning out of Search and Teach but are not quite ready for the rigors of NILD. They have successfully mastered many of the Search and Teach techniques and are beginning to be introduced to NILD. Some of the NILD techniques may still be too advanced for these students at this level. Students are seen for approximately 40 minutes a day, four days per week.
